While taking some time off over the holidays I happened upon a book called “iPod, the Missing Manual” and did some reading of it to make sure I was taking advantage of all the nifty features that my iPod and iTunes offers.
The book provided great instructionals on how to use all of the iPod and iTunes features including using “Genius”, add title/album/genre/rating info to a song, remove duplicates, etc., so I spent a few hours cleaning up my music library and “tuning up” my tunes. I also learned about the “Smart Playlist” feature and created a few Smart Playlists of my own. If you don’t have time to read the book here’s how to use the Smart Playlist feature:
Creating a New Smart PlayList in iTunes.
A Smart PlayList is just another way to easily assemble your music into playlists for your listening pleasure. Once you give iTunes some guidelines of what you want, a Smart Playlist will go through your music library and come up with a mix tailored to your specifications. The nice thing about Smart Playlists is that they adjust on the fly based on what music you delete or add to your library.
For instance, I had a ton of holiday music in my library. I wanted to be able to quickly listen to a shuffled playlist of all of my holiday genre music. As I add music frequently from CD’s, friends and from the iTunes Music Store, I also wanted this list to be continually updated with any new holiday music that I add without any extra hassles. Voila…. There are a ton of parameters that you can specify to get just the perfect Smart Playlist for you! Here’s how to do it, so give it a try…
Create a New Smart Playlist in iTunes
1) Choose File – New Smart Playlist.
2) Give iTunes detailed instructions about what you want to hear. You can select by artist, genre, album, year and so on.
3) To add multiple criteria click the plus (+) button.
4) Make sure you check “Live Updating” that way if you add any new songs that fit within your parameters your Smart Playlist will automatically update with your newly added songs.
3) To edit an existing Smart Playlist, right click the playlist’s name and then choose “Edit Smart Playlist”.
