If you’re like me – still running Windows XP – you’ve probably been reminded recently to update to Service Pack 3. A few months ago I tried to update both my PC and my laptop to Service Pack 3 and kept running into errors. Well this week I finally decided to tackle the job of figuring out why the service packs weren’t updating properly on my machines. I like to keep my software updated for security reasons and I was having some trouble with Internet Explorer – so I figured that updating would kill two birds with one stone.
I ran the update on my laptop by clicking on the bubble that suggested I download the recent updates. If you don’t have automatic updates enabled, you can go to Internet Explorer, click on the “Tools” tab and choose “Windows Update”. The download went fine for my laptop, taking about 15-20 minutes to do the install. Internet Explorer had been upgraded to Version 8 and all was working fine.
Next, it was time to try updating my PC. About 5 minutes into the download process it threw another error (like the times before) and was unable to complete the update. RRRrrrgh. So I found a link on the Windows Update website (http://update.microsoft.com) that led me to “chat with a support rep” about trouble with the update. I had my doubts about how effective this approach would be but I am very pleased to report that the rep (who was from India) was more than helpful and was able to suggest that I download the Service Pack outside of using the Windows Update program. He provided a link to get the download and I saved it to my computer and then proceeded to install it error-free.
So if you are having trouble updating your Windows operating system, contact Microsoft via their online chat and they’ll provide you with a link to download Service Pack 3 and you’ll be quickly on your way…
