Featured Web Project:
Ni`ihau Cultural Heritage Foundation, an organization formed to assist the people of Ni‘ihau in retaining their culture and language as well as in developing economic self-sufficiency. Another purpose of the website is to help build the brand name of the Ni‘ihau shell lei by educating the public on the history and true value of this fine folk art which has been a part of the unique Ni‘ihau culture for at least two centuries, probably much longer.
Ni`ihau also known as the Forbidden Island is the smallest inhabited island in Hawai‘i located 19 miles off the West coast of Kauai. It is roughly 18 miles long and from 3 to 6 miles wide with a total area of approximately 70 square miles. It’s the absence of certain things on Ni‘ihau that seems to be an enduring aspect of life on the Forbidden Island. There are no paved roads. No cars. No stores. No restaurants. No doctors. No police. No fire department. And no indoor plumbing. To learn more about the Island, it’s people and the fine folk art of Ni`ihau Shell Jewelry please visit the website at www.NiihauHeritage.org.
